Order of DeMolay: Back in El Tour to help the race flow so everyone can have fun

We are very excited and thankful to have Order of DeMolay back with El Tour this year. The kids and the organization have done exactly what they said they would: be involved and make a difference.

The world is not the same place that it was a few years ago. College and the need for higher education dominate society at a time when education costs are rising and “experience required” is listed next to every job opening.

Now more than ever, Arizona’s youth need a way to set themselves apart as leaders who are assets to any college or job that they apply for.

DeMolay in Arizona prides itself on providing tangible learning experiences to young men ages 12-20 in an environment that focuses on family, friendship, and leadership. They have opened opportunities for our members to gain skills and experiences that they’ll need when it comes time to interview for a job or apply for college.

Recognizing that young men learn best when having fun, DeMolay focuses its program on an experience-through-action concept where the members choose what events they participate in.

Alex Lowry, head of the local chapter in Arizona of the Order of DeMolay, is proud that his group gets to be the people cyclists see when they cross the finish line.

“We actually worked at the finish line,” he said. “We’re the guys who hand out the medals, and we direct the traffic so we can keep people from running into each other. Overall it’s been really good.”

With just over a month until the ride takes place, Lowry wants to let the community know what DeMolay is all about and they should ride for them.

“Just like every year, it’s all about getting the word out,” he said. “If riders want to ride under our name, that’s awesome. Even if we just talk to somebody, if we just get one extra person involved, it’s more than enough and worth everything we do.”
