BICAS all about education, affordability & recycling to facilitate great cycling
More than just a bike shop, BICAS uses bicycle education to help the people of Tucson in all of their biking endeavors. Through advocacy and bicycle salvage, the mission is to participate in affordable bicycle transportation, education, and creative recycling.
Through generous donations from the community, and responsible stewardship of those donations, BICAS is able to provide a variety of programs. From learning how to fix a bicycle, earning a bicycle, creating unique art from recycled materials, and providing programs specifically targeted towards youth.
Bicycles and other human-powered machines are essential vehicles for transportation justice, and BICAS is always striving to make them more accessible to our community. Whatever your cycling experience, whatever your budget, at BICAS, you’re sure to find a bike that fits your size, style, and price needs.
BICAS is committed to the community, empowerment, justice, collectivism, sustainability, and inclusivity.
“For people who can’t afford bicycles, we provide retaken bikes from the community as well as our work trade program which gives $16 an hour in credit so they can obtain a bike,” said Kristen Lindgren, the development manager for BICAS. “Most of the people we serve are people living in poverty, and unhoused people who have very low incomes. So, our programs help them gain access to transportation.”
With BICAS is now in its third year with El Tour, Lindgren knows the type of impact the event has on the community. BICAS wants to be hand in hand with El Tour in creating a safe and welcoming bicycling community.
“We’re doing a little bit better every year as far as outreach goes, but at the end of the day we just want to reach as many people as possible,” she said.
